History[]

Birth[]

DSCF1602

Hercules as a baby.

Hercules was born on Mount Olympus, a child of Zeus and Alcmene] but in this Disney film it says that Hera is Hercules's mother. All the gods celebrated, except for Hades. He plotted to overthrow Olympus. Then, when Hades asked the Fates about it. They said that if Hercules fought in the war, he would lose. So Hades sent Pain and Panic, his imps, to turn Hercules mortal, and kill him.

Pain and Panic got so far as turning him mortal, when they were interrupted by a pair of mortals. They found Hercules, before he drank the last of the potion that turned him mortal, so he retained his godly strength. Hercules was taken in by these mortals, while Zeus and Hera wept.

Childhood[]

Hercules

Hercules as a teenager.

As a young child growing up, Hercules was always a misfit. His strength proved to make him more destructive then helpful. Other children wouldn't play with him, and Hercules was called "Jerkules". In the movie, when he and his mortal father are going to the market, Hercules accidentally demolishes the whole market, after attempting to catch a discus that pulled him into a column. A pot seller called him a freak, and Hercules, ashamed, returned home with his mortal father, Amphitryon. He tries to lift Hercules' spirits by telling him not to let what everyone at the marketplace said get to him, but it is ultimately futile, as the disheartened teen admits that, no matter how he tries, he simply cannot fit in with normal people, and begins to question his place in the world. Shortly after arriving, his mortal parents reveal the truth, that he came from Mount Olympus. Hercules, stunned by this news, travels to the temple of Zeus to learn more. He learns that he can only become a god once more if he becomes a true hero, Zeus tells him to seek out the Satyr Philoctetes who is the trainer of heroes and so off Hercules goes. Philoctetes (who prefers Phil), at first, denies the request due to multiple failures in the past (Jason, Odysseus, Perseus, Theseus, and Achilles) , but a lightning bolt from Zeus convinces him to try one more time.

Adulthood[]

The span of Hercules' training goes on for many years, finally ending with him having matured into an adult. He insists on being given a road test, so they go to Thebes to build his reputation. However, they are sidetracked by a damsel in distress at the river. It turns out to be Hercules' future love interest, Megara, being hit on by a lovesick centaur named Nessus. He falters at the start when he loses his sword and instead picks up a fish that swims off in fear, but manages to defeat the river guardian using his physical strength, though Phil is less than impressed, saying he let his guard down because of "a pair of big goo-goo eyes". After bidding Meg farewell, they arrive in Thebes and find it has been through so many disasters (fires, earthquakes, floods and increased crime rates) that the citizens are becoming despondent. He introduces himself, but they do not believe him, until Meg comes back with news that two boys (actually Pain and Panic in disguise) have been trapped under a rock slide. He rescues the two "boys" and subsequently defeats the Hydra, proving his mettle as a hero.

As days go by, Hercules becomes more and more famous with each monster he defeats. He tells Zeus about this, but becomes discouraged to hear that he is only halfway to becoming a true hero, and must find out how to get the rest of the way by himself with the cryptic message "Look inside your heart." Following this, Hercules is approached by Meg who convinces him to play hooky by getting a date (although this is just so Hades can discover his weakness). The date is interrupted by Phil, and they are whisked away to the colosseum. By the time Phil finally gets there, he is happily going through his workout, unable to stop thinking about Meg. The two of them then have a falling out when the former reveals Meg's connections with Hades. And speaking of whom, he comes to the colosseum to convince his estranged nephew to take a day off from heroing (in reality, this is just so he can take over Mt. Olympus). Hercules refuses at first, but soon relents after seeing Meg being held as leverage. To add insult to injury, Hades then confirms Phil's claims when Pain and Panic reveal themselves as the two "boys" he rescued earlier. After the Cyclops attacks Thebes, Hercules goes to defeat him, brushing off Meg when she tries to stop him, but the one-eyed giant overpowers him until Phil returns to encourage him, and the former falls off a cliff to his death. He then gets his strength back (Meg's sacrifice having broken a deal he made with Hades prior), and goes to Olympus, saving the gods and destroying the Titans for good. Unfortunately, this proves to be a hollow victory, as The Fates cut Meg's thread of life, causing her to succumb to her wounds.

Determined to save Meg, Hercules descends to the Underworld and confronts Hades. He then makes a deal with his uncle: exchange Meg's soul for his own. He dives into the Styx River, and just as he is about to perish of accelerated aging due to its effects, his godhood returns and he is able to emerge unharmed. Hades then tries to bargain with his nephew, but the latter knocks him into the river. He returns Meg's soul to her body, and they are taken to Olympus. There, Zeus and Hera reveal that it was his selfless sacrifice that restored his godhood. However, Hercules turns down the offer to return to the kingdom of the gods to live with Meg, finally knowing his place is with her.

The Myth Behind the Character[]

Hercules (Muscle Man)

Hercules as a Muscle Man.

In Greek Mythology, Hercules, or Heracles (Herakles) is son of Zeus and the mortal Princess Alcmene of Thebes . Because of Zeus's unfaithfulness, Hera hated Heracles. Heracles had also a twin half-brother, Iphicles. Iphicles was the son of Alcmene's mortal husband Prince Amphitryon (he's also Alcmene's brother), while Heracles was a son of Zeus.

Heracles was originally named Alcides, but his names changed to mollify Hera. This was unsuccessful.

Only a few monthes after birth, Hera sent two serpents to kill him and his half-brother. Heracles however throttled them, and was found by his nurse playing with them as if they were toys.

After accidently kill his music tutor Linus with a lyre, he was sent to care for cattle by his foster father. He was visited by two nymphs, Pleasure and Virtue, who offered him the choice of a peaceful life or a severe glorious life. He choose the latter.

It was later in Thebes that he was rewarded Princess Megara after saving Thebes, and she bore him six sons. However, in a fit of madness brought apon by Hera, he killed his children (In some cases, Megara too). After realizing what he had done, he fled to the Oracle of Delphi. Unbeknownst to him, the Oracle was guided by Hera. He was ordered to serve under King Eurystheus. This caused the 'Twelve Labors of Heracles'.
